Week 2

Blog: Drawing from the Physical > Digital example on slide 17, write a post on your blog about a (physical) public space you use frequently? What are the unique (physical and organizational) qualities of this space?  How do these qualities affect your experience within this environment / how you communicate with others in this space?

  • Optional: also try The signals: A Guided Primer.

The pictures are the coffee shop I used to work in before. Overall, the space is composed of a bar counter and seats with different combinations of people. There are side-by-side window seats, seats for 2-4 people, counter stools, and one large table for ten people. I'm at the bar most of the time, but sometimes I come in as a customer when I'm not on a shift.

I would say that the unique part is the seat for ten people. During the weekday, students or office workers from nearby schools often sit alone. Compared with the seats for 2-4 people, they prefer to occupy a corner in the big table area. In this situation, that block will be tranquil.

Also, I often sit in that block when I go to the store as a customer. Another part of the reason that affects my choice of that block is that I would love to leave the seats for two people for other guests who come with their friends. This way of thinking and the arrangement of positions form an interesting tension in this space.

But sometimes, groups of more than five people will use that block. At this time, the volume distribution of the overall space will be reversed, and the volume of the 10-seat position will be much louder than other spaces in the store.

In addition, the side-by-side seats by the window also have a unique appeal. A large part is a beautiful scenery outside the window, so that many guests will designate that block. Another factor is because of the arrangement of the seats. The guests sitting next to each other will not look at each other, so many guests who come alone also like that area a lot.

Finally, I also thought that I had read the statement of gender on seat preference, saying that women prefer to sit face to face, and men like to sit side by side. So I searched for some articles about interactive space on the Internet, and I found this.

Curious about is this trend also in line with the inclination of most people in our community.

2-2

Try: Set up your local development environment.

If you have a different setup you prefer, feel free to use that! Environment from Image: Find an image which captures your attention and curiosity on the Library of Congress web archive.  Using this image as inspiration, create a 3D environment using three or more of the following techniques.
  1. Use at least one light and one shadow
  2. Use an image or video texture
  3. Position objects in space using a for-loop
  4. Move your camera over time
  5. Change a camera parameter over time
  6. Change some aspects of the environment over time

At first, I found it is so hard to set up the environment by myself, and I found the tutorial, which helps me a lot.
