Week 1

1-1

( 1 ) Weekly Observations

During a week of observations, I first noticed patterns of human behavior, from preferences for subway seats to the relationship between kitchen countertops, stoves, and sinks.

After drawing the floor plans of several kitchens I have lived and worked in and thinking about my culinary experience, I found the chronological order of cooking ingredients and the pattern of these spaces very interesting. I felt that the area's patterns seem to come from a desire for order. They allow us to prepare various cooking ingredients organized so we can act accordingly at the right time.

When it comes to the emotional feeling, it doesn't give me a strong emotion, so it seems a little hard to describe precisely. Or I guess it's because it is more like an evolution of logic and order. I can only think of a few words: orderly, precise, graspable...etc.

So then I thought about patterns that produced a clear feeling for me. The first thing that came into my mind was the jagged light of the waves, with regular and similar lines constantly appearing, giving people a sense of stability and relaxation. Perhaps because the shapes are similar but different, we will not expect various patterns and concentrate on the shapes' generation and changes.

In addition, the wind blows through the leaves, creating fascinating shadows - circular light and shadow, zooming in and out up close, wiggling gently. They are stacked layer by layer; the leaves on the same branch form a small galaxy system, moving together at a stable distance, meeting with another cluster of galaxies on the ground. It gave me a peaceful, calm, lively, and energized feeling.

Practice

I used the abovementioned video to try out the vertical and horizontal slit scan practive. The result is a little close to the original picture. Maybe you can try other sketches provided by the course to do some different small exercises.
