Week 4
Speaker Reflection

At the very beginning of this week’s talk, I wondered why this week’s speaker didn’t prepare a presentation. And I notice that, in most speeches, the speaker uses pictures and words to help everyone more easily understand the message of each chapter. But in this speech, because there were no these prompts, I was more attentive to the audio content, which was different from the usual experience of listening to lectures.

In the content of his speech, I realized the importance of alt text. I spend most of my time working on the visual elements for my website, but I never wonder why I didn’t edit the alt text. It also made me wonder if it’s because social media doesn’t require alt text to post or if there’s no popup to remind me to fill it, so I don’t have the habit of editing these texts at all. At the same time, I was also reminded of alt text in the hypercinema class the following week. The teacher turned off the screen and played the movie trailer without audio description (the segment without dialogue). And I learned how vital these things are for the situation without vision.

Beyond that, I realize my lack of accessibility and assistive technology knowledge, so maybe I’ll add steps to check all accessibility in my future designs. All in all, I was very encouraged and inspired by her presentation, and I will try to do more practice for accessibility in my future works!
